Today landmarks and iconic buildings across the world are being lit up in orange to celebrate World Patient Safety Day, a day created by the World Health Organization to raise global awareness of issues and challenges across all healthcare settings. This day is also, not coincidentally, the fifth anniversary of the Transfusion Evidence Round-Up.
We launched our first ever Round-Up on World Patient Safety Day 2021, around the theme of ‘safer maternal and newborn care.’ Since then, we have created seventeen quarterly Round-Ups on themes such as International Thalassaemia Day (2022 & 2026), World Kidney Day (2024), World Heart Day (2023), and International Childhood Cancer Day (2026). We were thrilled to be awarded an ISBT Award in 2025.
The Transfusion Evidence Round-Up is a collaboration between the Systematic Review Initiative (SRI) and the International Society for Blood Transfusion (ISBT), with volunteers drawn from ISBT and the wider transfusion community. This year’s theme for World Patient Safety Day is ‘Safe care for non-communicable diseases’. We hope that our Round-Ups can contribute by strengthening the evidence base.
